PeTA Caught Lying AGAIN!

By:  "Noneofyurbiz," an anonymous talk.politics.animal poster

On the Meat Stinks web site, a page titled
"Beef: What's Rotting in your Colon"
http://www.goveg.com/rotting.html
(July 16, 2001)

contains the statement:

"A 1999 study, published in the American Journal of Gastroenterology, investigated the rarity of colon cancer in black Africans. The authors concluded that the low prevalence of colon cancer in this population is related to the absence of animal protein and fat."

The actual study does not make the claim made above.

The study writes - "The diets of all the black subgroups were characterized by a low animal product and high boiled maize-meal content" and "The low prevalence of colon cancer in black Africans cannot be explained by dietary "protective" factors, such as, fiber, calcium, vitamins A, C and folic acid, but may be influenced by the absence of "aggressive" factors, such as excess animal protein and fat, and by differences in colonic bacterial fermentation."

O'Keefe SJ, Kidd M, Espitalier-Noel G, Owira P. 1999
Rarity of colon cancer in Africans is associated with low animal product consumption, not fiber. Am J Gastroenterol May;94(5):1373-80

Note the web page I note above claims the authors concluded the low prevalence of cancer was due to the "absence" of animal protein and fat.  The authors of the study note that the population has a "low" (not "no") level of animal protein consumption and that it is the absence of "excess" animal protein and fat consumption.

PETA unethically and dishonestly deleted six words to get the conclusion they wanted.

Yet another example where an AR organization falsely represents a medical study.

Given all the lies, I wonder if any AR organization is capable of correctly describing a medical study.
